Berklee Performance Center Concerts SPRING ‘86 March 24 Double Concert — ETHNOFUSICOLOGY/DARCEL! — Faculty trumpeter Bill Scism presents his student ensemble in a program of original music that combines contemporary electric sounds with horns and a bamboo flute. In the second half, faculty drummer David Weigert presents a program of pop/rock and rhythm and blues originals for this seven-piece ensemble featuring student vocalist Darcel Spear. [ March 25 POLY WANTS A RHYTHM — Drummer Jack Cook offers an evening of varied music and group settings. In the first half, a quintet will perform ECM style original compositions. After intermission the group Digital Hands, with faculty members Tim Hagans, trumpet, Steve Rochinski, guitar, and Fred Lipsius, sax, will perform jazz- rock-flision compositions by group members. March26 EASTERN STANDARD TIME — Larry Baione, Assistant Chairman of the Guitar Department, presents a program of solo acoustic Jjazz guitar including selections by Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Pat Metheny. March 27 IN THE MORNING — Senior vocalist/arranger David Lee Chandler presents an evening of funk, gospel and jazz styles for a large ensem- ble and dancers. Special guests will include Loretta Chandler, new star of the television series "Fame,” and Raymond Johnson of the Boston Conservatory. March31 Double Concert — BETTER THAN NOTHING/IMAGINATION FLIGHT — Opening this concert will be a quartet led by drummer Fumio Ishizaka performing jazz standards and original compositions featuring the writing talents of Yukiyoshi Arimasa, Tsutomu Takeishi and the leader. In the second half, bassist/composer/arranger Larry Jackson presents original contemporary jazz for both small group and big band with special guests, faculty members Cliff Wittstruck, guitar, Bob Zung, sax, and Roy Okutani, trumpet. April2 PLAY FIDDLE PLAY — Berklee String Department Chairman Matt Glaser presents an eclectic concert of improvised music for acoustic violin. Styles and settings will include swing tunes with big band, quartet, various trios and duos and unaccompanied violin as well as various ethnic (Appalachian, Balkan, Indian) influenced pieces. April3 Double Concert — FLYIN' HAWAIIAN PRODUCTIONS II/LOOK TO THE SKY — Keyboardist/arranger Lester Gantan opens this con- cert with a set of funk, fusion and funk-rock for a large ensemble with special guest trumpeters, faculty members Dave Johnson and Roy Okutani. In the second half, vocalist/e@mposer Vatrena King % presents "Look To The Sky, ” a program of original contemporary pop songs including compositions and arrangements by Evie Nelson, Monika Englund, Chris Horvath and others.
