Berklee Performance Center Concerts April 8 - The Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra - Under the direction of faculty composer/arranger/trumpter Greg Hopkins, the Concert Jazz Orchestra features the finest instrumentalsts in the college playing original music written expressly for the group by talented student and faculty writers. This evening’s concert features music composed by Masako Hamamura, Michael Beck, Oli Bott, Laura Andel, Toro Dodo, Membhet Sanlikol, Eyal Maoz and others. April 10 - International Folk Festival - The annual Berklee International Folk Festival is a collaborative effort involving over 1000 students representing over 70 countries, the Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs/Dean of Students, the Performance Studies Department, the Student Activities Center, the Interna- tional Club, and the College Diversity Committee. The concert will feature groups from Sweden, Yugoslavia, Cape Verde, Jamaica, Mexico, Brazil, Greece, Israel, The Republic of China, and the USA. These student acts will perform music from their respective countries while dressed in native costume. Some groups will even perform dances from their homelands. Following the performance, everyone is invited to a party in the Dining Hall where food from around the world may be sampled. Mead, Honorary Consul of Sweden April 12 - A Tribute to Joe Viola Musician, author, innovator, teacher, Joe Viola was Berklee’s first woodwind department chair and designed the standards which have shaped dozens of top- flight musical careers. His own superb musicality and professionalism, including fluency as a performer on all saxophones, clarinet, English horn, flute, and oboe - ensured that practical approaches to doubling skills became a vital part of the department’s curriculum. Produced by Performance Division Dean Matt Marvuglio and Woodwind Department Chair Bill Pierce, the evening will feature performances by Joe’s friends and students over the years: Jane Ira Bloom, Gary Burton, Carol Chaikin, Richie Cole, Clare Daley, Jamie Fatas, Donald Harrison, Fred Hersch, Javon Jackson, John LaPorta, Donny McCaslin, Andy McGhee, Bruce Nifong, Jim Odgren, Bill Pierce, George Roberts, Tommy Smith, Tom Ferrante April 15 - Professional Writing Division Awards Concert - This concert, under the direction of Division Dean Joe Smith, will feature the music of student award winners from each department in the Professional Writing Division.
