SPRING 1989

THE JOHN NEVES MEMORIAL CONCERT—Bass Department
Chairman Rich Appleman and the department faculty members
present a memorial concert for nationally known jazz bassist, the
late John Neves with proceeds benefiting the John Neves Schol-
arship Fund. The concert will feature a 13-piece bass choir and
various solo, duo, trio and quartet settings. Also paying tribute to
the late bassist will be special guests Herb Pomeroy, Ray Santisi,
Mick Goodrick, Joe Hunt and others.

MY MONKEY — Faculty saxophonist Fritz Renold presents an eve-
ning of acoustic jazz performed by his quartet with Peter Herbert,
bass, Renato Chicco, piano, and Alex Deutsch, drums.

NEW GROOVES/I DON’T KNOW—Songwriting department
faculty member Jimmy Kachulis opens this concert with a program
of ethnic jazz grooves for a six-piece ensemble. In the second half,
faculty guitarist/composer/arranger Jeff Friedman presents origi-
nal progressive music performed by his quartet with faculty trom-
bonist Lennie Peterson.

FACULTY PIANISTS’ NIGHT—A Tribute To Bill Evans—
Piano Department Chairman Paul Schmeling presents his faculty
members in a variety of small group settings showcasing the talent
of this department and featuring the music of Bill Evans.

THE FOURTH STREAM/MEETINGS & FAREWELLS—
Flugelhornist/composer/arranger Dmitri Matheny presents

a contemporary chamber jazz ensemble performing original
compositions with special guests Deirdre Jenkins, voice, and
Wolfgang Muthspiel, guitar. In the second half of this double bill,
flutist/composer Lucio Godoy offers a program of post-Latin jazz
for sextet.

ONE MIND, ONE SOUL IN CONCERT/AFTER THE ZONE—
Vocalist Jeff Ramsey opens up this double concert with a program
of rhythm and blues originals and covers, as well, some gospel
tunes performed by his group One Mind, One Soul. In the second
half, trumpeter Kenny Rampton leads his sextet performing origi-
nal straight-ahead jazz compositions.

INFANT EYES/THE BERKLEE JAZZ ENSEMBLE — Vocalist
Michiko Sawanobori leads her sextet in a program of contempo-
rary jazz compositions by Coltrane, Shorter and Corea with special
guests faculty members Greg Hopkins, trumpet, and John Ramsay,
drums. In the second half, the Berklee Jazz Ensemble, proclaimed
the best student jazz ensemble in the nation as recent winners of
an N.A_J.E. competition, will perform jazz standards and originals
under the direction of trombonist Delfeavo Marsalis
