College | | @G ["\_/"M&fl@ Berklee Faculty Association Concert Series Overture For Band Felix Mendelssohn 1809-1847 This work, which dates from the 1830's is one of the first works written for concert band. The Overture is in the standard ''Sonata" form and exhibits the same types of Romantic harmonies found in Mendelssohn's orchestral works such as the Hebrides Overture. Andante e Presto (1973) Leland Forsblad 1925~ Mr. Forsblad teaches in the music department of the Fresno Calif. public schools. He has been an active composer for over 30 years including the time he spent in a P.0.W. camp during World War II. He organized, and composed for, a band made up of his fellow prisoners. Andante e Presto uses some chord sounds which we often think of as reserved for contemporary ''pop'" music, and makes them fit quite well into the style of a serious band work. " Prelude - Plainte Calme Olivier Messiaen scored for wind ensemble by Anthony Donnelly 1908+ Originally a work for piano, this prelude facinated Mr. Donnelly, a composition major at Berklee. He set the work for wind ensemble and we hear its first performance, conducted by Mr. Donnelly, at this concert. George Washington Bridge (1950) William Schuman 1910~ This well known work is subtitled "an impression for band". In the front of the score Mr. Schuman writes: ''There are few days in %he year when I do not see George Washington Bridge. Ever since my student days, when I watched the progress of its construction, this bridge has had for me, and almost human personality. ...assuming different moods depending on the time of day or night, the weather, the traffic, and, of course, my own mood as I pass by." . Festival Te Deum (1937) Ralph Vaughn Williams 1872-1958 The Coronation of Britain's King George VI was the occasion for which this work was written. The tunes are all English folk melodies and the arrangement for brass and percussion was written from the orchestral score by John Bavicchi at the request of Oxford University Press. ; With the BERKLEE CONCERT CHOIR | e
