Concurrent Session |l 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Concurrent Session |l A New Age of Activism 22 Fenway, Room 204 The 2016 presidential campaign brought to the surface a dramatic level of discontent with the status quo. Both of the major party candidates drew negative ratings in public opinion surveys. Some said that efforts during the campaign to present an alternative, from within the Democratic party and later from outside it, were obstructed by a combination of party-imposed rules and media practices. This panel will discuss how popular discontent has been denied full expression. In order to become effective, it will need to create new spaces, new forces, new institutions, which will also need to embody a higher sense of common purpose than has been defined.
