Biographical/Historical note

Hungarian-born composer, conductor, and educator Tibor Pusztai was born on December 23, 1946 in Budapest. Pusztai fled to the United States from Hungary’s Communist invasion in 1956. A prodigious violinist and violist, he studied at The Julliard School with Ivan Galamian and the New England Conservatory, where he served as assistant to Dr. Gunther Schüller. As a conductor and composer, Tibor Pusztai worked with numerous orchestras, including the New England Conservatory Orchestra (under Schüller), the Alvin Ailey Company, American Ballet Theater, and the Manchester Symphony. In 1994, Pusztai came to Berklee College of Music as an educator, teaching courses in composition, conducting, scoring for strings, harmony, counterpoint, and orchestration. Prior to Berklee, Pusztai taught at the Hartford Conservatory, Tehran University, Ithaca College, and the New England Conservatory.
